Some people say that have never heard about cases like that. However, those who wear contact lenses either had this experience or heard a lot of stories about that.

Yes, what I’m talking about are contact lenses lost in eye, which is actually was one of the worst experiences in my life. I can’t say it’s too dangerous, but probably it can be. Just contact lenses lost in eye really make you feel very nervous because you have no clue what will happen next.

Maybe, the experience of mine is very similar to many others who also had contact lenses lost in eyes. Anyway, I want to tell my story, since it might help somebody who is panic-stricken right now because of a contact lens lost in eye.

So, the first rule that you should always follow if you do not want to have contact lenses lost in eyes – NEVER wear them when you go to bed. This is exactly how one of my contact lenses appeared somewhere behind my eye, at least I thought so.

Second rule you should remember is do not panic and don't try to take a lens out. Usually, a contact lens lost in eye comes out after a while and there is no need to make some attempts to take it out. For instance, I made a big mistakes and started to rub my eye like crazy. A lens didn't come out, but my eye was really badly hurt. The only thing you can do is to use drops that probably will help a contact lens lost in eye to find a way out.

There is one more reason why you should not try to take your lens out. I heard a really terrible story when a contact lens lost in eye broke into tiny pieces when a wearer was trying to find it. It can be very dangerous and painful, so be careful!

Thus, there is almost nothing you can do if you have contact lenses lost in eye. Either wait until it comes out or visit your doctor.

I have to work a lot at the computer, and several years ago I noticed some changes in my vision. A doctor proved that for some reasons my sight was getting worse and suggested several options how I could manage the situation.

Definitely, I decided that wearing contact lenses would be a good choice. Needless to say, at those times I knew nothing about contact lenses, contact lense prescriptions and their significance. Fortunately, my doctor was so kind to explain me everything, and now I’m glad to share my experience and knowledge with novices who are going to wear lenses as well.

So, your contact lense prescription is not just a piece of paper as I used to think at first. It is a kind of document that all those who wear lenses should have or its copy. By the way, I found out that such a status of contact lense prescriptions was protected by special legislation.

Another reason why contact lense prescriptions are important is that lenses are actually a medical devises. What is more, these devices are designed for your eyes, which I’m sure you do care about. If you buy contact lenses without a contact lense prescription, you can simply harm your eyes.

There is one more thing that you should remember about your contact lense prescription. All contact lense prescriptions have an expiry date. I didn’t know it and, actually, found this info on one of the online forums. Yet, it is true, and your contact lense prescription is going to be valid for one year. After an expiry date you won’t buy lenses any more until your doctor releases an updated contact lense prescription.

By the way, I guess it’s the right thing to do. In the great majority of cases we feel comfortable in our lenses and think they work well. We will never notice some microscopic problems that only doctors can identify. So, updating contact lense prescription is important indeed.

What is the main difference between hard and soft contact lenses? If you asked me to explain the difference in a word, I would say – usability. Soft contact lenses are easy to use – you get used to them at first wearing. However, hard contact lenses are known for more distinct picture they enable to see. Astigmatism (that most people this or that way suffer from) is easily corrected with hard contact lenses, and it’s much more difficult and sometimes impossible to treat it with soft lenses. The thing is that hard lenses give a hard and strictly round shape to damaged cornea. Soft lenses are just put on the cornea and, therefore, they cannot treat astigmatism or cannot correct it in full. Moreover, they can ruin the eyesight as they can slightly warp at drying and winking.

If go on to compare hard and soft contact lenses, I should say that hard lenses are more lasting than the soft ones. Hard contact lenses are less subjected to air pollution impacts. Soft lenses absorb water, sprays and cosmetics. Saleswoman at perfumery can notice soon that her lenses became dirty and cause inconveniences now. Sprays can damage hard contact lenses as well, but as opposed to soft ones, hard contact lenses are easier to clean.

If you go in for sports, you’d better wear soft lenses (under the assumptions they correct eyesight well), as the chances they can fall out are rather few, what is more, they are less subjected to pollution than the hard lenses.

Choosing between hard and soft contact lenses consider also the following. At hard contact lenses wear, every wink exerts pressure on cornea. This may have both positive and negative effects – it depends on whether this pressure causes cornea damage or it prevents myopia progression. Soft lenses don’t exert any noticeable pressure on cornea, and it takes less time to get used to them. Besides, you will be less sensitive to glare wearing soft contact lenses.

Note that there are so called hard/soft contact lenses that combine features of both lenses types. These lenses centers are made of airproof hard material which is enclosed into soft plastic. These hard/soft contact lenses are expected to offer distinct images of hard lenses and comfortable use of soft lenses.

Your decision on hard or soft contact lenses depends on your needs, eyesight, occupation, hobby, environment, light sensitiveness and the way you handle your lenses. If you haven’t decided on hard or soft contact lenses yet and your doctor considers any type to suit you, I would recommend using soft lenses at once. If you don’t achieve the desired results, you may try hard ones. Good luck with your lenses!

The main feature of soft contact lenses is moisture absorption. When soft contact lens dries out, it loses its flexibility and becomes very fragile.

Soft contact lenses are used in treatment of myopia, long sight, presbyopia, astigmatism and in aesthetic purposes, namely, for eye color change. There is a wide range of soft contact lenses – there are those that can be worn at daytime, 24 hours, a week, or a month.

Soft contact lenses can be used for medical purposes, such as at aphacia, at introduction of medicine into the eye, or when there is a need to protect the eye to enhance its healing. Soft contact lenses, as opposed to hard ones, are less likely to move or to fall out. Soft contact lenses are easy in use – patients adapt to them at once.

People with long sight can wear soft contact lenses, however, as the ways they see objects in glasses and in lenses differ, as a rule, they do not reject wearing glasses - they wear glasses and soft contact lenses by turns.

For years, contact lenses were known as hard contact lenses. They first entered the market in 1940s and were made of organic glass. At present day, this material is rarely used even though organic glass is firm, rather cheap, and characterized by a good transparency. The main drawback of this material is low oxygen permeability. In modern eyesight improvement hard gas-permeable lenses are used. These hard lenses are more flexible, characterized by a good transparency and a high oxygen permeability which is the most important criteria for people choosing contact lenses.

A fundamental defect of contact lenses is long adaptation period and possible discomfort at wearing them. As a result, most of patients who chose hard contact lenses at first have rejected wearing them later. However, if the person got used to hard contact lenses, he/she may benefit from using them, as, contrary to soft contact lenses, hard contact lenses enable to see better, they are cheaper, more longeval and they require less daily attention. Hard contact lenses life time is 7 years and more. Hard contact lenses, as opposed to soft ones, can be polished in case any scratches appear and may be corrected in case a patient gets new prescription from his/her doctor.

At first, hard contact lenses are felt as a foreign body in the eye. If hard contact lenses are chosen and fit properly, this discomfort disappears little by little. During the first weeks of wearing hard contact lenses you may have overwetting in the eyes and you may see indistinctly, but you will forget about it soon.

Most patients get used to hard contact lenses – to feel comfortable they wear them every day. If you wear hard contact lenses for 12 hours a day and then make a break for a while, you will have to adapt to them again. Firstly, hard contact lenses are worn 4 hours a day, then, this time is increased.

If you wear hard contact lenses more than 14 hours a day, you may face different problems related to oxygen supply of cornea. As opposed to other organs, cornea is deprived of blood vessels. Cornea is highly dependent on oxygen and cornea prevents oxygen supply. Partially, this problem is solved in the following way: with every wink, hard contact moves and a new tear rich of oxygen enters the space between the lens and the cornea. However, this is not enough to supply cornea with oxygen to full extent. After wearing hard contact lenses for several hours cornea cells start swelling because of oxygen shortage. Cornea edema causes discomfort which leads to the cloudy visibility. As a result, a patient can refuse wearing hard contact lenses and start wearing glasses again.

Discomfort and cloudy visibility are ruled out with the hard gas-permeable lenses mentioned above. The material they are made of can absorb oxygen and other gases. One can wear lenses of the kind all day long – without any discomfort or bad visibility. Due to high moisture content of their material, gas-permeable hard contact lenses are easily adjusted to and, therefore, are more welcomed by the patients.

You are welcome to consider the main steps in contact lens fitting – read the hints below, make sure you fit the lens properly and feel comfortable wearing lenses!

Contact Lens Fitting: The Basics

Start fitting with the right eye;

If you feel very uncomfortable after the lens has been fit – put it off and do not hesitate to contact your doctor;

Answer the following questions after the lenses have been fit: Do I feel comfortable with my lenses? Do I see well? Do my eyes look well? - if some problems appear, visit your doctor at once;

Use enzymatic cleaner only, do not use running water before fitting the lens.

Contact Lens Fitting: Centering the Lens
Sometimes it may happen that your lens shifts to the sclera (the white part of the eye). This may happen both at the process of wearing the lenses or at improper contact lens fitting. To center the lens do one of the following:

Close your eyelids and carefully move the lens back through the closed eyelid, or

Carefully move the lens back to cornea with your eyelids open – pressing slightly the edge of the superior or inferior eyelid with your finger.

Contact Lens Fitting: Putting the Lens off

Wash your hands before putting the lens off;

Make sure the lens is on cornea and then start removing it. There are two ways to remove the lens – nip method and method of removing the lens with thumb and forefinger – you should choose the one prescribed by your doctor;

When the lens is off, disinfect your lenses as directed;

If you just started wearing contact lenses – put them off near the table to easily find the lens that may fall out;

Keep the lenses carefully separated.

Contact Lens Fitting: If the Lens is Stuck
If the lens is stuck to your eye and won’t move, use the solution recommended by the doctor. Wait till the lens falls out by itself – do not remove it manually. If the lens won’t move, consult your doctor at once.

Though most people consider aesthetic beauty to be the main advantage of contact lenses wear, in fact, there exists a number of other advantages. Let’s see the pros of contact lenses wear (they are applicable both to soft and hard contact lenses):

Eyesight becomes more natural; dimensions are seen almost as they are. If you wear glasses, shape and size of objects may seem distorted;

At eyes moving, contact lenses move along with eyes, therefore, there are no distortions that may appear if you wear glasses;

At contact lenses wear spectacle frame does not restrict peripheral vision any longer;

When it rains or snows, spots of rain or snowflakes do not contact with lenses;

Contact lenses do not weep at temperature or moisture change;

If there is a need of vision correction for eyes which see in a different way, contact lenses are the only way to get your eyes function in concord;

At contact lenses wear some people who suffer from squint, tend to improve the control of oculomotor activity;

At contact lenses wear there is no need to resort to vision correction frequently;

Contact lenses can protect cornea during its recovery (soft medical lenses);

Contact lenses may become a component for more complicated visual system for visually impaired;

In some cases, contact lenses are the only way to help people having bad eyes – when cornea is wrong shaped, disabled, or at keratoconus (erosion and evagination of cornea central part as a taper).

Keeping in mind the advantages of contact lenses wear, let’s consider the precautions as well:

At contact lenses wear be careful when using hairspray, deodorants and perfumes – you’d better close your eyes at spraying. Try to avoid standing near a person who uses sprays;

If you’ve caught a cold or you suffer from seasonal allergy, please, prefer glasses to lenses for a while;

You can wash and take shower at contact lenses wear; however, you should not look up at water sheet, as your lenses can slim away;

If you spend much time in smoky places, your lenses can change the color and can lose their features;

If you have drunk a lot – don’t forget to put the lenses off before going to bed;

Make sure you use quality cosmetics. If you have sensitive eyes, apply allergenic cosmetics. Please, note that there exists special cosmetics for people wearing contact lenses (produced by French company CONTOPHARM);

At contact lenses wear swimming, playing active games and horse racing are possible.

It’s important to follow your ophthalmologist’s advice as for contact lenses wear and rules as for the use of lenses conditioners (including lenses storage containers), as different problems related to contact lenses and their conditioners may lead to severe eye damage.

In general, bifocal contact lenses serve people above 35 who cannot read close by. The problem is called presbyopia. It is age-related – eyes lose their ability to focus things at short distances. One zone of bifocal contact lenses corrects your sight far away; another zone corrects your sight at short distances.

Hard bifocal contact lenses entered the market in the early 60s, but they did not gain ground. The thing is that bifocal contact lenses were hard to fit, and they required long adaptation period. At present, hard bifocal contact lenses are made of air-proof materials and number many kinds.

Soft bifocal contact lenses are comfortable at use, but their property to correct long or short sight leaves much to be desired.
There is no notion of an ideal bifocal contact lens, no matter whether it is hard or soft. There are no ideal bifocal glasses as well. They all have their pros and cons. To avoid a mistake in bifocal contact lenses choice and to overcome their constraint in use, some professionals resort to the so-called monovision strategy. This means that a patient can wear different bifocal contact lenses in different eyes at a go.

Bifocal contact lenses, as well as bifocal glasses, require adaptation. Your eyes should get used to choose a zone for distinct sight for every moment. Not everyone can wear bifocal contact lenses – much depends on a patient’s desire to adjust to wearing them.

Vision correction contacts serve to relieve from eye pain, to cause therapeutic intervention, and to sustain eye moisture. Also, vision correction contacts serve a container for contact eye supply with drugs.

Vision correction contacts are used in the following cases:

At chemical and heat injuries;

During post operative period, like after keratoplasty;

At erosion and injuries of cornea;

At cornea diseases;

At xerophthalmus;

When cornea is deformed.

Vision correction contacts are used for long period under the care of a physician and are changed with some other lenses, if needed.

It should be noted that vision correction with the help of the lenses of the type is quite widespread and effective. Vision correction contacts are considered a functional alternative to glasses. Moreover, vision correction contacts are preferable at different professional activities and sports. There are about 150 million people in the world who wear vision correction contacts.

Still, vision correction contacts wear is highly individual. Wrong choice of vision correction contacts, failure to comply with rules of their wear and care, bad disinfection and late renewal can lead to a number of diseases, whereas at professional choice of vision correction contacts, their systematic renewal and examination, there is a slim possibility of complications.

In recent years, there has been a scientific breakthrough in vision correction contacts technologies. Lenses made of new materials do not restrict oxygen entry to cornea; they are characterized with high wettability and biocompatibility with eye tissues. In modern vision correction, there is a general tendency to make vision correction contacts wear as easy and safe as possible. This is achieved through simplification of rules and recommendations that the patient should follow.

Contact lenses care presupposes a number of steps in lenses care, mode of contact lenses wear, and repeated visits to doctor. The reality of modern life is such that most people do not want to admit the importance of proper contact lenses care, as a result, they do not treat it with due attention.

Patients fail to keep to the rules of contact lenses wear due to different reasons:

They cannot remember all the recommendations; sometimes, doctors forget to give proper instructions;

Insufficient motivation to keep the rules of contact lenses care: patients consider contact lenses care difficult and time consuming;

Patients try to save their money: they start to wear cheaper contact lenses (without doctor’s approval), use insufficient solution at cleaning and disinfection, omit some steps in contact lenses care, overwear contact lenses;

Patients follow bad advice of their friends who insist that there is no need to observe the rules of contact lenses care.

Though patients may fail to observe different rules in contact lenses care, still, there are the most “popular” rules that patients ignore. So, patients often:

Don’t wash their hands before using contact lenses;

Omit some steps in contact lenses care;

Use insufficient solutions;

Do not wash lenses after cleaning well enough;

Don’t care of lenses container;

Can put on dirty contact lenses;

Can reuse the solution which was already used for disinfection;

Use retarded solutions.

Failure to follow doctor’s advice in the mentioned spheres may lead to different complications of contact vision correction – ranging from slight eye irritation to those that threat vision as a whole. Severe complications, such as allergic reactions, and infectious complications may result from reluctance to follow the rules of contact lenses care.

Contact Lenses Care: Late Renewal

Late renewal of contact lenses remains one of the most burning problems of contact lenses care. The problem is crucial in all countries – no matter whether it is an economically developed country or the one where economy which leaves much to be desired. By nature, most people try to save their money – the problem of overwearing is rooted in economic aspect uppermost.

Contact Lenses Care: Hygiene

Failure to comply with hygiene rules is one of contraindications in contact vision correction. Wash your hands with soap, then wash them under the water sheet, make sure your hands are dry before touching contact lenses. Don’t forget about your contact lenses container – if it is dirty, microbes can enter contact lenses as well which may lead to serious diseases.

As microbes cannot be seen with the naked eye, patients tend to underestimate the danger of contamination, and, therefore, they use one and the same container for a long time. To help patients, manufacturing companies offer a new container along with a multifunctional solution. Thus, CIBA Vision Company offers a new container Microblock with antibacterial effect along with SOLO Care Aqua solution.
